Who is Don Skene?

Born in Splott, Cardiff on 5th February 1936.

Introduced into the Tigers cycling club at the age of 15 and quite quickly commenced racing in time trails and racing on the brand new track at Maindy and was immediately smitten.
Progressed very well in a short time and raced in numerous events in England and Wales.

Opened up a small retail shop at the age of 16, selling and repairing cycles, located on the top of Rumney Hill, Newport Road, Cardiff in 1952.
I owned the business for 53 years, I have now retired but the business is still going very strong in the care of my daughter Liane and son Jon.
At 18 years old I was selected to represent Wales at the British Empire and Commonwealth games in 1954 in Vancouver, Canada, winning a bronze medal in the 10 mile event, this was totally unexpected and 18 years old in cycling this had not occurred in any previous games in the sport of cycling.
Four years later (1958) the "games" was held in Cardiff, I further competed and won the same medal, at the same distance.
Finally I went out to the next games in Perth, Australia in 1962, with no success. I got knocked off my bike whilst poised for the gold medal - Rather sad about that!
During this period I raced for the R.A.F. national team, raced numerous times for Great Britain, in both long and short tours to South Africa, Guiana in South America and the Continent.
I became British 10 mile champion. One year I was awarded British cycling's largest trophy as Britain's best track all-rounder.
Broke various track records in various countries abroad plus held the Maindy flying one lap amateur record for 44 years! Then lost it in 2002 to a rider from Latvia.
During my cycling career I won many Welsh championships.
It is noted that "games" cycling medal are somewhat hard to come by as after my medals in 1954 and 1958 it was 44 years before Wales obtained a further third medal in male individual events, a silver medal won by Huw Pritchard in 2002 and a fourth medal won by Geraint Thomas in 2006.
My cycling career extended from 1951 to 1963, retiring at the age of 26 to concentrate on my business.

In retirement I live most of the time in central Florida riding my bike and helping youngsters into the sport in my locality. In Conclusion I reflect back over the years and feel grateful to cycling for the opportunities I had competing and winning, plus the numerous opportunities of traveling the world, without paying!

Its good to ride a bike.
